Samsung Galaxy K Zoom: A Smartphone/Camera Hybrid
Samsung Galaxy K Zoom: A Smartphone/Camera Hybrid

The K stands for “Kamera.” This is Samsung’s Galaxy K Zoom, a smartphone/camera
hybrid that sports a 20.7 megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom. (Via Samsung Mobile) Aside from the outrageously large, outrageously
megapixel-packed camera, the phone has all the usual fixin’s: a 2 megapixel front-facing
camera, 4.8-inch screen, 2GB of RAM, 8GB internal memory, and your typical sensors — accelerometer,
proximity sensor, etc. (Via Samsung Mobile) For those of you who aren’t so interested
in the techie mumbo-jumbo, Re/code notes the phone has some software features you’ll be
interested in — especially for you selfie snappers. “On the software side, the Galaxy K includes
a ‘selfie alarm’ that lets users take timed self-portraits using the main camera and a
‘pro suggest’ mode that suggests five filter settings that could work well with a given
shot.” Although it packs in a lot of the same tech
you’d find in many smartphones on the market, Samsung’s senior vice president tells CNET
this device is something totally different. “The K Zoom is not just a camera. It’s not
just a smartphone. It’s a camera-specialized smartphone and is a totally new category that
you’ve never seen before. It’s a world’s first in the industry.” But a writer for Business Insider, isn’t sold
on the idea, initially calling the device “pretty gimmicky,” saying it’s not quite worth
the extra lump of plastic and metal to have a premium camera. And yet, Pete Pachal of Mashable says the
device “walks the line between phone and camera better than anything [he’s] seen before,”
and even goes as far as to say “when you’re using it as a phone, you’ll forget it’s a
camera, too.” But conflicting opinions across the tech-blogosphere
are nothing new. Samsung is set to release the device overseas later this summer, no
word on whether it’ll make its way to the U.S. Maybe we’ll never know if it’s too bulky
or just right.

Dumb.  All this does is make the crappy dumb pics that everyone snaps of pictures that NOBODY wants to see anyway just a tiny bit better.  If you want to take a quality picture, use a damn camera.  If you want to talk on the phone, use a cell phone.  It's a gimmick in every sense of the word.  Aimed at people that just aren't smart enough to decide if they want to do real photography or just make their crappy selfies look a tad bit better.  And let's be honest, it's going to take a lot more than a camera to make those selfies look better…  come on people!
