John Lah MD

My name is Dr. John J. Lah, I specialized in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology. So gastroenterology is the study of, basically, the disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as any digestive disorders and hepatology is related to the diseases of the liver. I knew from the very early ages I really wanted to help people and it seemed, basically, that this seemed to be almost like a destined type of a profession, but at the same time did have a lot of encouragement for my parents and then with the sciences that I was interested in, it just seemed to really make sense and it everything fell into place. So I went the Medical School in New York Medical College, I did my residency in University of California Irvine Medical Center in Orange and I did my fellowship at that same location as well. My wife always tells me that I’m a workaholic, so I do believe that I work a lot more than the average doctor in a sense, she’s an installation artist so essentially she does a lot of three dimensional work as well as some more modern art. We met while I was in residency. I enjoy what I do and I still have a balance where I know I’m able to go out and do what I enjoy outside of medicine. Experiencing new foods and restaurants. I’m a big-time foodie, but I also love golf and quite frankly, it really gives me an idea of trying to keep on improving on something and not never being able to perfect it, so you’re always learning, which is the one of the beauties of Medicine as well that you’re always learning. My treatment philosophy really delves into educating patients and and to have a partnership between patients and myself to make sure that they understand what they’re experiencing and how they could actually involve themselves in the treatment as well. I think that a good physician is always going to be the one that actually starts to have a really good rapport with the patient, number one, and also cares and is kind and also, wants to do whatever is best for that patient. I feel that PIH Health cares- cares about their patients and quite frankly it’s humbling experience and it also grounds me, allows me to see that what I do makes an impact on somebody else’s life and helps them in a medical way.
