we know it’s a asset to the community Port Aransas and what’s next for the Palmilla beach golf course out in Port Aransas thanks so much for joining us tonight well many places in Port a have reopened nearly a year since Hurricane harvey that Golf Course remains closed turns out the damage from the storm pointed to the future of that golf course there in Port a chris 6 News reporter Nikki Laprade ei visited the course today she joins us now here in the studio well Lea after assessing damage to the golf course the owner of Palmilla Beach knew that there would be a long road to recovery so instead of just making repairs they’ll be making improvements and the company believes that the upgrades will bring even more people to Port Aransas with the coastline as a backdrop the Palmilla Beach Golf Course offers a unique setting for the people who came here to play the championship golf course Arnold Palmer design and we played about 23,000 rounds a year out here but the Gulf waters became trouble when hurricane Harvey hit last summer there was a tremendous amount of sea water that came on the golf course and we had a difficult time getting it off once it was removed Gregory Carr of Palmilla Beach says they found significant damage the greens were gonna be a total loss and we knew that from the beginning the storm also took away its source of irrigation so with such a big rebuilding effort ahead car says Palmilla be started to not only think about restoring the golf course but making it better we brought in our land planners we brought in architects we brought in internationally renowned true golf to help us plan the facility of the future the future car says is the same direction of the industry with golf moving more toward entertainment he says that will come in the way of new amenities and features to make it more friendly to a novice golfer or non golfer altogether we really want to appeal to a wider market but fun isn’t the only focus car says paul mia beach also has future storms in mind after taking a beating from Harvey we saw some vulnerabilities with the storm and some of the floods we’ve had the past few years so we will make significant improvements on the golf course that’ll help drainage and such as we go forward our construction has only been underway for about two weeks now car says specifics on the new course will be released in the next month or two and the target date for the reopening is April 1st of next year Priscilla all right Nick ela thanks so much for that report
