4.4 – Sidney 1880 Robbery

Hi I’m Carol Wang and it’s time for today’s Now You Know Nebraska! (music) Want to go on a treasure hunt? Then you want to head to Sidney, Nebraska, where two gold bars stolen in an 1880 robbery are still missing today. When gold was discovered in the black hills of South Dakota in 1876, Sidney, Nebraska became a key supply post. At one point 23 saloons stood within one square block. Gold hunters would venture down from the black hills and then use Sidney to ship their treasures to the east and west coasts. In March of 1880, a gold heist from Sidney’s depot netted the robbers 480 pounds of gold. Later that day, all but two of the gold bars were found hidden in the depot’s basement in the coal supply The two unfound bars, 5760 ounces of gold, are still missing to this day. Their value today…6.7 million dollars! So if your exploring in western Nebraska and you see something shiny in the distance, it might be worth a closer look! I’m Carol Wang and now you know Nebraska.
